Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº11
Vol. 12 No. 11 (2026)

With this Volume 11, Verbeia reaches its 22nd issue, bringing together both annual and monographic publications that reflect a sustained trajectory over time and a shared commitment to scholarly study, reflection, and dialogue. Reaching this point is not merely a matter of editorial continuity; it is the result of a network of people whose collective efforts make each issue possible.

This volume includes valuable contributions by Francisco Rafael Alcalá Moreno, Inmaculada Caro Rodríguez, Camilo Esteban Goelkel Medina, María Jesús Martínez-Alfaro, María de Marcos Alfaro, and Marta Miquel-Baldellou, whose work enriches the issue and once again highlights the diversity of approaches and perspectives that characterise Verbeia. The volume is completed by two book reviews by Óscar Ruiz Hernández and Mónica Velasco Martín, which offer rigorous and thoughtful contributions to the essential critical dialogue between texts and readers.

We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to all those who place their trust in Verbeia as a space for dissemination and debate: to the authors who share their research, to the readers who accompany us issue after issue, and especially to the members of the editorial and scientific committees, as well as to the reviewers, whose often unseen, generous, and demanding work ensures the quality and academic rigour of the journal.

This volume is, ultimately, the result of a collective effort and the shared conviction that knowledge grows when it is built together.

To all who are part of this journey, thank you for making it possible.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº8
Vol. 10 No. 9 (2024)

Dear readers, authors, and members of the Scientific and Editorial Boards:

We are glad to announce that Volume 10 (number 9) of the journal is now available. If the publication of a new issue usually implies great joy and satisfaction and the achievement of a major challenge, on this occasion, our joy is twofold. The reason for this joy is that we have reached our tenth anniversary since the publication of number 0 and have grown in many respects. It is, therefore, a source of joy particularly to count on a renewed, varied and committed editorial and scientific board of unparalleled professional and human quality. Thanks to the work and effort of all those who form part of this team, this issue number 9 is coming out with ever greater visibility, scope, and relevance. We have reached this point with great expectations for the future, enthusiasm, and projects of which we are proud, and achieving ever higher goals. Once again, thanks to all of you who make Verbeia possible. We hope you like the issue we present here.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº8
Vol. 9 No. 8 (2023)

Dear readers, authors, members of the Scientific and Editorial Committees:

The number 8 of Verbeia is now available. It is, as always and on every occasion, for us, a  great satisfaction when a new issue comes to lightand. as always, please, let us start by thanking both committees, reviewers, and authors for their help and trust once again.

We feel this issue represents the evolution of the magazine, its growth and, why not, its consolidation on the way to its tenth anniversary. The volume that we now present is probably the most complete, varied and, without a doubt, the one that most proposals has received and the one that presents more contributions. All of them rank high on quality and diversity. As the reader will see, the contributions in this issue range from Phraseology to the writings of Flannery O'Connor or Jane Austen to the application of literature in education and in the Spanish classroom, the work of Josefina Aldecoa or the visualization of feminist writing.

An issue that we hope, from the point of view of the reader, really shows that consolidation, those pillars of variety and diversity and another step forward in the history of our journal.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº7
Vol. 8 No. 7 (2022)

Dear readers, authors, members of the Scientific and Editorial Boards:

We are pleased, once again, to present this new issue of the Journal Verbeia. A number full of hope and motivated by the relief of having managed to get almost completely out of a global Pandemic, which has affected our society so much, and specifically, the way we relate and live together. For this reason, we have not relented in our efforts to publish number 7, and to continue working with the same enthusiasm that we once had when we published number 0. The linguistic diversity of this number demonstrates, on the one hand, the thematic scope of the magazine, including articles in the two base languages of publication, which are Spanish and English, and emphasizing the power of teaching Spanish as a foreign language. And on the other hand, the other two pillars of Verbeia, cultural and literary diversity, which we show in this new issue through literary and essay works, genre and cultural studies, educational proposals or translation studies and reviews. I am proud to write these words and to be the transmitter of that strong feeling of moving forward with this project, having overcome and eliminated those contradictory feelings that two years ago during the Pandemic and lockdown, we declared in our magazine. The publication of number 7 makes us witnesses of overcoming and keeping on working, and taking steps forward with effort and great enthusiasm. Once again, many thanks to all of you who make Verbeia possible.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº6
Vol. 7 No. 6 (2021)

Dear readers, authors, members of the Scientific and Editorial Boards:

Another issue is published with great enthusiasm in the midst of the 21st century’s pandemic. It is imperative, prior to introducing the new issue and expressing my gratitude, to wish you all my best desires of health. In a very similar way to the previous number, I would like to allude to how the number 6 of Verbeia has been forged and has come to light as a result of a new way of life. We continue living in an anomalous situation caused by social isolation, and even if we are now more used to it, we are not less heartbroken for that. However, since late 2020, our hope grew when we heard the news of the approval of the first vaccine against COVID-19, an event that raised the hope of escaping from confinement and saving lives. Yes, it was a halo of life that science gives us and reassures us. That is why today I introduce this new issue of Verbeia with some relief and with the desire to continue working on many other issues full of enthusiasm and hope, and to continue a work that fills us with joy and satisfaction. This number is another example of the diverse research of Verbeia; a sample of a trajectory that has given us many satisfactions and is part of our identity, and that, as we have been doing in previous issues from different perspectives, research is fostered through different literary genres such as gothic or gender literature and poetry, journalistic and linguistic essays. Manuscripts that, like a palliative injection of the new vaccine, fill us with hopes and new expectations and lead us to take another promising step to move forward with other issues to come. With these "Preliminary Words" I want to thank everyone that Verbeia has become our hopeful reality. Once again, many thanks to all of you who make Verbeia possible.

Isabel Morales Jareño. Co-editor and Secretary of Verbeia.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº5
Vol. 6 No. 5 (2020)

First of all, before presenting the new number and acknowledgements, I would like to stop for a moment to reflect to be able to transmit what we are experiencing and how being able to bring Verbeia number 5 to light today has made this lockdown more bearable. Since the notification of the State of Alarm in our country, seeing how other countries had already started this process and seeing how others were joining the lockdown has generated, both in our spirit and in our hearts, surprise, heartbreak and helplessness. I present number 5 of Verbeia with contradictory feelings, but the process of publishing one more issue, knowing that we continue working to make Verbeia possible, makes us move forward, move forward and overcome the unimaginable, the desperate reality that we have had to live. It's not just me presenting Issue 5 today. My fellow editors join in these “Preliminary Words” to share with you our feelings and gratitude. Once again, thanks to all of you who make Verbeia possible.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº4
Vol. 5 No. 4 (2019)

We release a new issue, a new image and also open number 4 of Verbeia on Open Journal Systems. Nine professors, scholars who share their articles in this edition of Verbeia have contributed in this issue. Out of  these, six are included in the Linguistics section, and the other three contributors in the Literature section.

With OJS we open up a new panorama in the article management and supervision system. After five years publishing, we could not demonstrate, in the face of the evaluations for the indexations, the veracity of the selection process for the publication of contributions, but with OJS the ceiling has been opened for Verbeia we thought we had reached before, because we can now give ourselves visibility and accessibility, show the freshness of our management in the publication processes and record all communications between authors, reviewers and Committees. This procedure was essential for us to include ourselves in the publication system of the online Academic Journals, to have greater transparency in the policies that govern the publications and to reach the indexation with absoulute clarity in the administration and the distribution of articles for evaluation.

It is amazing how this team has evolved and grown, each professor and researcher making up the Editorial Committee, the Scientific and Evaluating Committee that have exercised and are exercising, to this day, an invaluable work. An asset and an effort that I can only be thankful, and I want to publicly expressed. Verbeia exists thanks to everyone's work, the contributions we receive monthly, together with the perseverance and the commitment of my colleagues.

Verbeia exists because, in this troubled world, we find in the language, in its literature and in its culture, the linguistic wealth that holds peoples, people together, whether from here or there.

I hope this issue is as successful as the previous ones.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº3
Vol. 4 No. 3 (2018)

On this occasion, number 3 of Verbeia opens the Linguistics section with an article by Juana María Anguita that is about English written skills and intended for assessing the level of written English in Primary Education. The article by Najlaa Kounitrate analyzes the translation of some locutions frequently found in three versions of Arabic of Pedro Páramo. It is a contrastive phraseological study of Arab and Spanish. The Literature section presents a very interesting analysis by Patricia Álvarez connecting Irigaray's feminist ideas with Magda, the protagonist of the novel In the middle of nowhere in Coetzee. The following article by Álvaro Manzano intends to conduct an innovative analysis of Rushdie's Satanic Verses, in addition to, in the author's words, 'debunking false myths about the novel'. Esther Muñoz, in the following study, discusses the mythical elements of The Ebony Tower and tries to prove that myths are patriarchal and that they contribute to women's submission. A magnificent work is that of Concepción Parrondo on the reality of poor whites in the southern United States in Dorothy Allison's work, A Bastard Out of Carolina. The fifth manuscript is that of Rocío Riestra on the dystopian heroine in Divergent. This section closes with a article by Mariángeles Rodríguez on “the censorship of body languages” in the Spanish theater in the seventies. In this issue we also have a review of Paula Albitre on the work of Araceli López Serena, Orality and scripturality in the recreation of colloquial Spanish.

I am deeply satisfied with the year 2017 as it has been especially interesting For Verbeia. We have published our first monographic, digital and printed and we are about to close the second for October 2018. We have already prepared the third issue that will be released in 2019. We are closing numbers and opening new projects, we grow with the help of an Unrivaled Editorial and Scientific team. There is a lot of effort and work, but also very excited every time we publish a new issue.

I hope this one is as successful as the previous ones.

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº2
Vol. 3 No. 2 (2017)

We finish our third year by publishing Verbeia's Number 2. On this occasion, we count on eleven professors' research articles. The publication opens Linguistics section with an interesting article by Zuzana Ďaďová that deals with phonetic variation in the news on Canary Islands Television. No less attractive is Guadalupe Dorado's study of the importance of mother tongue in immigrants' identity. The third manuscript dealing with the social factors that influence the use of metaphors of daily life in the Corpus of PRESEEA in Granada, is carried out by Professor Lorena Martín. Aida Montenegro provides a relevant study on understanding the concept of motivation for learning a foreign language and invites you to analyze the Waldorf approach to language teaching. We close this section with the article by Tamara Robledo and Luisa María González who demonstrates how English can be taught to Secondary education TDH students or students with dyslexia without breaking the normal rhythm of the class. The Literature section begins with the exceptional study by Professor Julián D’Alessandro on the various readings and the disagreements by critics on Cela's novelNuevas andanzas y desventuras de Lazarillo de Tormes. Carmen Gómez Galisteo provides a remarkable analysis of the adolescent vampire narrative and the modernization of the Byronian hero. It is alo relevant the investigation by Professor Daniela Hernández-Hernández on how gender is represented within the literary corpus of Latin American poets Agustini and Neruda. Also interesting is the contribution of Celia López who carries out a contrastive analysis of the translation of Poe's story The Purloined Letter by Borges and Bioy Casares. We finish this section section by closing number 2 with the magnificent study by Dimitrios Tsokanos on the Hellenic allusions in Poe's Berenice. I conclude and I thank the entire Editorial and Scientific Committee for their work, their interest and their help in continuing our journey. Pending new work, we publish our third number with the same enthusiasm from the beginning and with great desire to continue growing. Sonia Sánchez Martínez. Verbeia Editor

Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº1
Vol. 2 No. 1 (2016)

Today issue 1 of Verbeia is published.  We are very proud to claim we continue a project that we started one year ago with great excitement to pass on the enthusiam and be infected by the dedication to Philology. Along the present year we have grown, our Scientific committe have increased, and altogether the hope for stability has also risen. We all know the effort that must be made to reach this stage, and today we have more than 16 articles written by professors and researchers from different universities around the world. In this issue, we have crossed borders in a world that, in a sudden, have been built them up again. Not only does it mean to cross our spatial limits and reach other countries, but also to break linguistic, artistic and temporal limits; to resognize the different expressions of literature either in poetry, theatre, cinema or novel. In conclusion, we aim at freely communicating and developing contents. We are thoughfully satisfied with issue 1, and from now onwards, a new call for papers is open, for which we expect to receive as many contributions as those received so far for the present issue. I just want to express my gratitude to all members of the Scientific Committee for their collaboration as well as the authors who have make this issue a reality and for their confidence in Verbeia.

Núm. 0 Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos Nº0
Vol. 1 (2015)

On 15th April we start publishing Issue 0 of Verbeia enthusiastically and with a bit of excitement that a project like this provokes. At present, in a world where economy, business and technology are rising and trendy values on the rise, creating a journal of English Studies were far more of a dream than reality. However, we insist on pushing forward Humanities and contributing for Philology to never stop being an object of study, research, teaching and debate. Love for words, texts and books is the reason for a group of professors and researchers to work together to get this issue off the ground. We wish our passion for linguistics and literature to be transmitted and spread the evidence that, if we live a wordless existence without texts or books, we lack imagination, free thought and humanity.
Verbeia is supported by a generous and excellent Scientific Board aware of such a reality that provides Issue 0 with impeccable contributions. In this first issue, today we aim to introduce ourselves to start a new long and fruitful way.
Verbeia is born, not only thanks to the Editorial Board, but also to the personal tenacy of the Dean of the Faculty of Education of Social Sciences and Education of UCJC, Don José Antonio Fernández
Bravo. We are specially thankful to all members of the Scintific Board, for their faithful trust and sincere confidence. Their sincere support will permit, from now onwerds, to read this Journal of philological studies. We want to make it extensive, but not end up on the scrap heap of history. And we want to reach all people who have been supporting our project, one way of another.

Special Monograph Commemorative Edition 25 years UCJC. A return to Camilo José Cela
No. 10 (2025)

In 2025, we celebrated a decade since the publication of the first issue of Verbeia. Journal of Philological Studies. This milestone marks ten years of publishing activity, preceded by two years of planning and management, totaling twelve years since the GRIMM research group met in the cafeteria of the Villafranca Campus to discuss future projects and propose the creation of an academic journal in a Faculty where, until then, no programs related to the humanities existed.

Since its inception, Verbeia has maintained as its fundamental objective the promotion and dissemination of knowledge in the field of philology. Throughout this decade, the publication has consolidated its presence in the academic landscape by incorporating original articles, critical reviews, and interdisciplinary studies that meet the highest standards of scientific quality.

MONOGRAFIC Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies. Revista de Estudios Filológicos.
No. 9 (2025)

The seven articles that make up the monographic issue “Female authorship in the face of the literary and educational canon” critically reflect on the marginalization that female authors have suffered within the literary system and the teaching of literature, and offer their particular contribution to combating it. The researchers and teachers who have participated come—like the authors studied—from different countries, cultures, and generations, and have taken an academic and educational interest in the contributions of women writers in different literary genres. Their approaches have been carried out from multiple methodologies and perspectives: literary, historical, feminist, sociological, philosophical, didactic, etc., which gives this issue as a whole an unquestionable richness and international, interdisciplinary, and multicultural character. Celia GARCÍA-DAVÓ, Laura PALOMO ALEPUZ y Helena ESTABLIER PÉREZ

MONOGRAFIC Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies. Revista de Estudios Filológicos.
No. 8 (2024)

This monographic number shows how literature, cinema, and other cultural materials can be integrated into teaching language and literature in Spanish through various activities. This enriches the educational process, providing students with a broader context for language learning. This material helps develop linguistic and analytical skills, fosters a more complete understanding of the cultures and realities of the Spanish-speaking world, and includes relevant topics and issues such as gender equality, racism, etc. Various methodologies are presented that promote group work through debates, discussions, and other products that involve creating content to consume, turning students into active subjects. Cultural resources allow students to learn the language, analyze literary texts, and understand the cultures, historical moments, and social situations that have influenced the production of these materials. Moreover, by including a variety of media and genres, those who teach can foster more profound and meaningful learning tailored to the students' interests and contexts.           Teresa Fernández-Ulloa y Miguel Soler Gallo

Far beyond the instrumental use of texts to teach school content, children's and young adult literature influences new generations in an ideological sense, transmitting the values, beliefs, models and normalities of the culture in which we live, as part of the process that anthropologists call enculturation. In the articles included in this issue, we present analyses of works and genres from this point of view, convinced that children's and young adult literature deserves attention and research at the highest level. MONOGRAPH Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos. Landscapes of Loss
No. 4 (2020)

2020 will remain forever in our memory as the year that changed the lives of practically all the inhabitants of the planet.  The virulence with which COVID-19 has hit us has undoubtedly led us to raise existential doubts about the meaning of our lives, love relationships and affections, and to reflect on concepts such as loss, memory and nostalgia that are present in all aspects of our lives since the pandemic began.  Hence, the articles that have been collected in this new Verbeia monograph address these issues from very different disciplines.  For Ignacio Castro Rey, nostalgia invades aspects of our behaviour, identity and our “landscapes” without our barely realising it and points to the fact that any leap forward actually requires a profound revision of the past. On the other hand, Carlos Lacalle explains in his article how the meaning of loss is multiple and not exclusively associated with the past, but it makes reference indiscriminately to any temporal directionality.  Asunción López Varela examines the semiotic basis of nostalgia as an affective structure, while Juan Orellana exemplifies the importance of affection in family relationships as they provide security to the individual.  Finally, Ana M. Martín Castillejos emphasises how the feeling of loss is also a creative tool that invites action, thereby becoming an engine for change.  This pandemic has given us the opportunity to meditate on the difficult situation in which all human beings find themselves immersed, and the present monograph may serve to reflect on the essential issues that we tend to overlook in the whirlwind of our daily lives.  Ana M. Martín Castillejos.

MONOGRAPH Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos. Literature and Genocide
No. 3 (2019)

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Primo Levi’s birth in 2019 this volume intends to pay a tribute to the millions of Holocaust victims like Levi, as well as others such as Jean Améry, Aharon Appelfeld, Edith Bruck, Charlotte Delbo, Primo Levi, David Rousset, Jorge Semprún, Ernst Wiechert, Elie Wiesel and Simon Wiesenthal, among others. On the other hand, 2018, at the beginning of which I started to prepare this special issue, marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, one of the most devastating 20th century massacres. The year 2018 also marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, a Gulag survivor and major writer. This volume, entitled “Literature and Genocide,” also aims to pay a tribute not only to him but also to the millions of people who, also like Georgy Demidov and Varlam Shalamov, to cite just two more names, suffered the hardships of the Gulag ordeal. Gustavo Sánchez Canales

MONOGRAPH Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos. Social and cultural spaces in women's literature
No. 2 (2018)

It is essential to examine gender, as well as social status and contributions of women, and the relationship established between power and gender. The literature of ‘writers or‘ women ’is currently a common topic and one of great debate in the global literature. However, in certain educational spheres it has not been integrated as the literature of ‘writers’ or ‘of men’.

MONOGRAPH Verbeia: Journal of English and Spanish Studies: Revista de Estudios Filológicos. Language teaching and multilingual education
No. 1 (2017)

The unprecedented spread of English worldwide and its status as the language of
international communication (Crystal, 2003; Jenkins, 2003; Mauranen & Ranta, 2009), also
referred to as “the world language” by Seidlhofer (2004: 209), have promoted the
implementation of different national and international policies in order to improve L2
students’ proficiency in English.
