Modification of attention biases in the treatment of aggressiveness
Main Article Content
Abstract
Aggressiveness has important detrimental effects on the physical and mental health of the population. Aggressive people have positive attitudes towards certain types of interaction involving physical confrontation with others, which they consider a legitimate form of behavior. When these mental schemas are activated, they affect information processing in its initial phases (attentional biases), conditioning the direction and intensity of behaviors. This narrative review develops the state of the art, and delves into the mechanisms that underlie and trigger aggressive behavior. It also discusses the studies that have worked on the modification of attentional biases in different disorders, as well as the inconsistencies in the results that arise from the differences between the type of paradigm and the material used. It is concluded that there is a need for tools that allow greater sensitivity and reliability in the measurement of attentional biases. This would contribute to improve the therapies applied to certain groups (abusers, prisoners), and the treatments of people with anger control problems and violent behaviors.
