Abstract

Identity well-development, an essential step towards adult life of today´s youth, is now influenced by the introduction of Online Social Network (OSN) in everyday life. In order to elucidate this point, the current study explores the relations between the OSN “Instagram” whether with the Identity Styles (Informational, Normative, Diffuse-avoidant; Berzonsky, 2013) as with the Big Five personality factors (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness; Costa & McCrae, 1992). Besides, in order to extend the literature, we could also examine the relations between identity and personality. Consequently, 98 young adults between 18 and 29 years old were collected in march-april 2019. Thus, the instruments applied were: OSN Instagram ad hoc test; ISI-5 traduced (Identity Styles Inventory, Berzonsky, 2013); NEO-FFI reduced (Big Five personality factors Inventory, Costa & McCrae, 1992). Our findings suggested that the personality factors which explain more accurate who and how Instagram OSN is used are neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. In addition, the most decisive identity styles in the use of Instagram were normative and diffuse-avoidant.
