Abstract

There has been a surge of interest in servitization by manufactuting companies in recent decades. Incorporating additional services into a firm’s offerings allow them to protect traditional product markets and enter new business areas. This research focuses on a database of Spanish manufacturing companies over the period 1994-2010. Data analysis highlights the difficulty in profiting from this strategy. Even companies operating with a level of servitization in excess of 30% for over a decade struggle to achieve success through servitization.
