Abstract

The aim of this article is to identify and contrast the influence of the dynamic New York´s cultural scene between 1967 and 1975 in the work and the artistic training of the poet and singer Patti Smith and the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. To do so we will begin in the analysis of the autobiographical book Just Kids by Smith, focusing on the historical and cultural context of the New York of those years, which sets up a fundamental artistic space in training and creative evolution of the protagonists. Finally, we discuss the concept of art and artistic impulse in Smith and Mapplethorpe, as well as their influences and relationships with other artists at that time and with the creative atmosphere of the city.
