Abstract

Offensive and taboo language functions as a linguistic vehicle which provides viewers with
information on the speakers’ mood, social class and cultural background. When this type
of langue is presented in subtitles, such terms tend to cause a bigger impact on the
audience (Díaz Cintas, 2001a) than those presented in their oral form. The subtitling of
offensive and taboo language is therefore a delicate matter to translators. The present
paper proposes a model of analysis of offensive/taboo terms in subtitling. Rooted in the
Descriptive Translation Studies paradigm (Toury, 1980), delving into the technical
restrictions of this Audiovisual Translation mode and resorting to a mixed or multiVerbeia
strategy method (Robson, 2011), the goal is to present a tool capable of analysing this type
of langue with any language combination departing from diverse descriptive studies.
Key words: offensive and taboo language, interlingual subtitling, technical restrictions,
Descriptive Translation Studies, multi-strategy method.
