Abstract

This article presents the results from an investigation that researched on the
implementation of the Guided Reading approach as a way to improve reading
comprehension in Spanish of students who participate in a Spanish-English Dual Language

program in Elementary Education in the United States. In order to assess students, reading
levels and comprehensionquestions will be used to determine the initial and final reading
comprehension level of every student who has participated in the study during a six weeks
period. The results show that those students who had participated in Guided Reading
lessons significantly improved their reading comprehension in comparison with those
students who had not participate in lessons using this approach. This article analyzed
these outcomes and discussed the adequacy of this instructional approach for teaching
literacy in Spanish in bilingual programs in Elementary Education. Finally, the
implications that this article has were considered and its authors have reflected upon
possible future investigations in this field of study.
