Abstract

Severe mental disorder (SMD) are defined not only through clinical criteria, but also through temporality and disability, adopting an integrative model that incorporates psychosocial factors in this conceptualization. In terms of diagnoses, the main groups associated with SMD are: psychotic disorders, major affective disorders, and personality disorders. In terms of temporality, a two-year treatment period has been used as a criterion. Finally, there is a very significant impairment of work, social and family functioning. In addition, they present other important problems added as more medical problems, substance abuse, suicide, unemployment and they suffer stigmatization and discrimination. Therefore, the treatment of people with a SMD should not only focused on reducing their symptoms, it should also promote their integration into the community and pay attention to increasing their well-being.
