Abstract

All companies attempt to keep their rivals from imitating the innovation they have just put on the market and thereby appropriate the profits it generates. The most widely used protection mechanisms are: patents, industrial secrets, complementary goods, and first mover advantages. The aim pursued is to elucidate the conditions each mechanism favours, in order to facilitate business decision-making.
