LORCA IN PERSPECTIVE. NEW VOICES AND CRITICAL HORIZONS ON THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH

Commemorating the 90th anniversary of Federico García Lorca’s death, this special issue of Verbeia brings together five articles that offer fresh perspectives on his literary and intellectual legacy. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the volume revisits established strands of Lorca scholarship while exploring dimensions of his work and reception that broaden the interpretative horizons of contemporary critical inquiry.

José Javier León Sillero reconsiders the aesthetic genealogy of duende through the figure of Pastora Pavón, while Concha García-Badía Fraga examines the expressive potential of objects in Lorca’s rural tragedies through the theoretical frameworks of the material and affective turns. Enriqueta Barranco Castillo investigates the presence of occultism and neo-spiritualist currents in the poet’s early correspondence, whereas Dolores Manjón Cabeza Cruz analyses Emilia Llanos Medina’s contribution to the construction and transmission of Lorca’s biographical image. Finally, María Jesús Perea Villena advances a reinterpretation of Poet in New York through the intersections of hyperrealism, posthumanism, and determinism.

This special issue originated in the Sixth Conference on Valle de Lecrín Studies, held in Padul in October 2025, and foregrounds the enduring relationship between García Lorca’s cultural roots in Granada and the universal resonance of his writing. Taken together, these contributions articulate a renewed critical engagement with Lorca’s legacy, reaffirming the continuing relevance of a body of work that invites fresh aesthetic and hermeneutic inquiry within twenty-first-century literary scholarship.
