Abstract

Self-exile is a form of the exilic experience that applies to writers who choose to break away from the cultural environment in which they produce their texts, making personal and artistic marginalization the central driving force of their creativity. Goytisolo rejects the constraints imposed by the Spanish cultural and moral environment on his thought and work, opting for distance from Spain and turning that very distance into the core of his books. Martín-Santos’s work reflects the incompatibility of his thought with the dominant premises of contemporary Spain, and his literary alter egos highlight the process and the harmful consequences of his marginalization. In both cases, the experience of intellectual exile is complex and painful, but at the same time it entails an expansion of the writer’s consciousness toward human and artistic dimensions that would be unthinkable without the rupture brought about by voluntary exile.
