Abstract

This article examines the religious dimension of James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room, a largely overlooked area in Baldwin studies. While criticism has predominantly focused on sociopolitical, racial, and queer perspectives, little attention has been given to the theological implications of Baldwin’s fiction. Drawing on biblical texts, Thomist theology, and Baldwin’s Pentecostal background, this essay argues that the novel discreetly incorporates Catholic elements that stand in contrast to Protestant traditions. In particular, the confessional tone of the narrative is interpreted through the lens of Catholic sacramental practices, especially penitence, which reveals a spiritual layer that has often gone unnoticed in critical discourse. By highlighting these features, the article contributes to ongoing debates on Baldwin by underscoring religion as a significant, though neglected, category of analysis in Western literature and culture.
