Laurela and Miss Havisham: prisioners of love

Abstract

The idealization of romantic love as a cultural construct has been the subject of literary criticism due to its effects on female subjectivity, especially in contexts where women are linked to amorous models that condition their identity and autonomy. Within this framework, a comparative analysis is carried out of Laurela in Amar solo por vencer by María de Zayas and Miss Havisham in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, using a comparative textual analysis with a philological approach. Common patterns of female victimization and social marginalization are identified in both historical contexts, arising from the internalization of idealized models of love and emotional dependence on the other, which reveals the persistence of structures that shape female subjectivity as dependent on a loving ideal and transform romantic idealization into a mechanism of control and social exclusion of women.
