Abstract

The increasing need for language teaching methodologies that foster both linguistic and cultural competence has been highlighted by globalisation. Yet the perception of cultural knowledge among prospective English language teachers remains largely centred on British culture, to the detriment of other English-speaking cultures. This mixed-method study aims to examine through quantitative and qualitative data the self-perception of undergraduate primary education students in relation to their knowledge of different English-speaking cultures. Surveys and a placement test were used to identify significant discrepancies in student perceptions, with a tendency to overestimate their knowledge of English-speaking culture. The findings of this study underscore the necessity to integrate an innovative methodology such as didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) into teacher training, to diversify cultural content in the curriculum and promote a more inclusive approach to English language teaching, embracing the richness and diversity of English-speaking cultures.
