Abstract

In this paper, we addres the concept of the norm of reading, which we understand as the set of core ideas or ideology about reading that, at a given moment, becomes dominant and hegemonic over other possibilities. We attempt to demonstrate that this norm is not limited to the way authors construct children’s text, but also extends to the manner in which act of reader mediation is carried out. We distinguish between two models; what we have called instrumental mediation and what we refer to as narrative mediation. A final section focuses on illustrating how the instrumental approach, which relates children’s literature to the current discourse on emotional intelligence, has become part of the hegemonic norm. Lastly, we suggest some alternatives to this aspect of the norm.
