The concept of the “room” or crossing the wall. Visibilisation of women´s writing

Abstract

Based on a didactic experience in the subject of World Literature, which starts with the reading of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, we delve deeper into the conception of women at the end of the 19th century and the roles to which they were subjected. At the same time, the reading establishes more contemporary analogies and reflects on the need for a "room of one's own" - real and metaphorical - for creativity, freedom and personal development, as pointed out by Virginia Woolf, with whom it also connects. Thus, the reflections extracted from both stories serve as a common thread to talk about the authorship of works written by and starring women, to analyse the causes and consequences of their scarce presence and visibility and the need to incorporate them into educational curricula. In addition, more coeducational alternatives are offered, worked on through advertising and audiovisual narrative products.
