Resumen

Este artículo analiza la dimensión religiosa de Giovanni’s Room de James Baldwin, un aspecto que ha sido desatendido en los estudios sobre el autor, ya que la crítica se ha centrado principalmente en las perspectivas sociopolíticas, raciales y queer. A partir de textos bíblicos, la teología tomista y el trasfondo pentecostal del autor, este estudio sostiene que la novela incorpora sutilmente elementos propios de la tradición católica que contrastan con los fundamentos del protestantismo. En particular, se interpreta el tono confesional de la narración a la luz de las prácticas sacramentales católicas, concretamente la penitencia, lo que revela una capa espiritual en la estructura narrativa que con frecuencia ha pasado inadvertida en la crítica literaria. De este modo, el artículo contribuye al debate actual sobre Baldwin al destacar la religión como una categoría relevante, aunque poco explorada, para el análisis de la literatura y la cultura occidentales.
